Ronaldo 30-Day Suspension and Fine Handed Down by FPF

Ronaldo 30-Day

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has given Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a 255-euro (£215) fine, BBC Sport reported on October 19, 2026. The Ronaldo 30-day suspension follows his exit from Portugal’s Nations League camp. The 41-year-old captain left after being an unused substitute against Norway and then learning he would not start against Denmark on October 1. The ban runs from the day of the Denmark match, so he has already served 19 days and will not miss a Portugal game.

The FPF disciplinary committee said it weighed “the remorse shown” in Ronaldo’s statement, along with his contributions to football and his athletic record. Ronaldo also submitted a CV of his awards and achievements as part of his defence. He pointed the committee to his earlier statement, in which he apologised to teammates and fans and said he deserved to be punished.

In that same statement, he accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice, which he called a breach of trust. Jesus denies any agreement but has left the door open for a return. FPF president Pedro Proença told the Portuguese outlet Record there is a strong desire to have Ronaldo back once the matter is settled.

The punishment appears to be at the lighter end. Reports before the ruling said FPF regulations allow a suspension of between one and six months and a fine of 500 to 1,000 euros. That would put a 30-day ban at the minimum, and the 255-euro fine below the stated range. Portugal also coped without him. The team won all three games in which Ronaldo was either an unused substitute or absent, and Gonçalo Ramos scored three times. Ronaldo still holds the men’s records of 146 goals and 234 appearances, and helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles.

The suspension ends on October 30. Portugal face Denmark in the Nations League on November 14 and travel to Wales three days later. Whether Jorge Jesus picks Ronaldo for those games is the open question.
